Emi thinks it's part of why she's chill with helping Rin with her piercings, and while it doesn't explain all of it - and while she often can't be patient enough to sit and watch Rin muddle over a piece for hours on end - things would go pretty far south for both of them if Rin couldn't paint, or Emi couldn't run. They need to be themselves so badly.
